History
The Center for Research and Communication
was founded in 1967 as a private, non-stock, non-profit research
institution serving the needs of the business community for economic
information. It pioneered in economic forecasting and industry
analysis, regularly communicating economic forecasts and industry
studies through written reports, briefings, conferences and seminars.
Soon after, CRC started to offer graduate degree courses to complement
the training of its research staff.
CRC rapidly expanded its activities in the
1970s and the 1980s enlarging its research capacity in macroeconomic
forecasting and industry monitoring and venturing into fields such as
corporate planning services, international studies, country risk
analysis and education. At the same time, it also expanded its
educational programs through the full establishment of graduate
programs in industrial economics, strategic and applied business
economics, and values education.
In the 1990s, CRC underwent a major
transformation. By establishing an undergraduate college in 1989,
eventually leading to the founding of several graduate schools, it
refocused faculty members' tasks to teaching activities appropriate to
a full-fledged institution of higher learning. In 1995, CRC became the
University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) with an undergraduate
college and the graduate schools.
Following this development, the Center for
Research and Communication Foundation was launched in 1996 creating a
new institution that would fully concentrate on research. The new CRC,
with the old CRC's Institute for International and Strategic Studies
forming its core and drawing on the intellectual resources of the
UA&P, stresses international networking and the
multidisciplinary handling of broad issues that are relevant to
business, government and civil society.
CRC today is in the process of further
rationalizing its operations by creating new divisions to achieve a
greater focus in sectors that have in recent years become integral to
the economic development of the country. By establishing divisions that
will concentrate on knowledge work for the tourism and information
technology industries among others, CRC hopes to help shape policy in
these areas that will help to realize their full potential in the
near
future.
Throughout the years, CRC has kept the
tradition of balancing scholarly research and active engagement in
policy debates and reforms. Taking advantage of the opportunities
arising from new technologies and the advent of a borderless world to
expand the scope of its mission, today's CRC continues to follow this
tradition of harnessing knowledge for progress.
