About the Social Enterprise Institute
Social enterprises are organized not only
for economic purposes, but more importantly for social development
among many communities. Their governance and social ownership are
normally based on participation by stakeholder groups,
characteristically formed by a common bond or interest. Social
objectives also vary in such areas of job creation, education and
training or provision of local services. They are seen as agents of
poverty alleviation and community building – constantly
evolving and obviously growing in numbers.
In the Philippines, social enterprises are
popularly exemplified by microfinance institutions (MFIs),
co-operatives and technical and vocational training institutions. Types
of implementing organizations also vary from non-governmental
organizations (NGOs), people’s organizations (POs), private
businesses with distinctive developmental goals, to public institutions
taking on entrepreneurial governance.
In such growth of social enterprises, the
Social Enterprise Institute (SEI) of the Center for Research and
Communication Foundation promotes their fundamental principles of
self-help and community solidarity. The Institute believes that social
enterprises are one among those catalysts of poverty eradication in the
country.
SEI therefore provides research (through
its partner, Social Economics Unit of the University of Asia and the
Pacific) and capacity building initiatives to social enterprises and
